Ganovax

 

This is a very special collectors item. The Ganovex was the German Antarctic programs resupply ship and it had just sunk several hundred miles from McMurdo. US Navy personnel station in McMurdo had been working with them for several days. The had become stuck in the ice, and the ice pack just kept getting tighter and tighter. The C130's were flying out to them and air dropping pumps. The ice squeezed so tight that water was coming from everywhere. When they couldn't pump the water out faster then it come in, they had to abandon ship. Helicopters were used to move the ships crew to shore. C130's found a place to land and took the crew back to McMurdo. I remember meeting them at the Officers Club in McMurdo. They were pretty shook up.
