The top picture shows the KARL's under construction. I know the date this picture was taken because of the ship in the bay. Here's an excerpt from a January SitRep. 'On 29 Jan. the AGS Yelco, a resupply vessel of the Armada de Chile visited Palmer. '

The KARLs were not used during the winter of 79. In the spring we would sunbath on the roofs. They created a  was a great solar oven.
