This
is a view from Observation Hill. The
annual Ice Runway is in full operation.
You can see Black Island (right) and White
Island (left) in the background. The Ice
Road from McMurdo comes in from the bottom
of the picture. "Use what you've got". The Ice Runway allowed larger, heavier aircraft to come in. Ice can handle wheeled aircraft. But it's temporary. The Skiway that was used in the late summer could only handle skied aircraft and that limited capacity. All of the facilities at the Ice Runway would be moved several miles back up onto the Ice Shelf each year when the ice became unstable. |
