| The Emperor |

It was uncommon to see an Emperor. We saw this one standing on the ocean ice while flying in a helicopter from the Dry Valleys back to McMurdo. This picture does not tell the whole story. The Emperor was a long way from open water. Directly behind us was a large crack, the only way out. It was full of Killer Whales, keeping an eye on him (and us). |
